INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

Education remains the strongest force that gives rise to the development in every nation. No nation can ever reach the level of development without standard educational system which can only be achieved under safe and peaceful atmosphere. Objectives of education can best be achieved in an atmosphere devoid of any form of violent behaviour both internally and related.

Several subjects are taught especially in higher institutions and colleges of education in particular. One of the area of studies in colleges of education is financial accounting. Financial accounting has been and will always be a very important subject in our secondary schools this is because of its role in equipping individuals with knowledge and skills, making them become employers of labour thereby reducing the rate of unemployment in the country. Any organization, no matter how small, be it a profit-making organization, a charitable organization or even a home deals with money, finds financial accounting most useful. Financial accounting is part of the Business Studies Curriculum in the group of Vocational Subjects. According to Peter (2010), financial accounting is the most popular subject that students offer among the vocational elective subjects.

Generally, financial accounting aims at providing specialized instruction to prepare students for career in financial accounting field; fundamental instruction to help students assume their economic roles as consumers, workers and citizens, background instruction to assist students in preparing for other professional careers requiring advanced studies in financial accounting; and financial accounting skills for personal use in future. These objectives, according to Yusuf (2016), are geared towards making the students to appreciate the rules and functions of accounting, lay a sound foundation for further study in accounting at higher level and also assess candidates’ knowledge of basic accounting principles and their application to modern business activities.

Financial accounting is the process of recording, classifying, selecting, measuring, interpreting, summarizing and reporting financial data of an organization to the users for objective assessment and decision making (Asaolu, 2013). Accounting data are processed into accounting information through the use of accounting principles and conventions.

The accounting principles are known as “generally accepted accounting principles”. They are the fundamentals which guide accountants in recording, appreciating and assessing accounting information as well as the preparation and interpretation of financial statements. The accounting information system is proven, time honored, and its format is universally understood. Books of accounts prepared by accountants in one part of the world are easily understood by their counterparts in other parts of the world because, the information system is based on principles that are widely accepted and globally used.

Financial accounting teachers employ various instructional methods in the classroom to ensure effective teaching and learning.

Social vices are actions prohibited by law or a failure to act as required by law. It has to do with violation of rule and regulations of an institution. The violation or failure to do what is required which turn to affect the person can also be seen as social vices.

Children are born innocent with a clean mind. As they grow and begin to interact with people in the society, they learn different behaviour. In this way, they become corrupted by the society and peers in the school. The Nigerian society has been witnessing ethical decline and moral crisis as moral values which were hitherto cherished are degenerating (Taiwo, 2018). Citizens of the country are becoming violent in nature, social vices vulnerable, materialistic, drug prone, sexually promiscuous, evil minded, and greedy. These unethical behaviours manifested by members of the Nigerian State have transmitted into the tertiary education system. Sexual harassment and victimization have been documented as serious social vices plaguing tertiary institutions in Nigeria, which have impacted fear and trauma, depression and aggressive behaviour on the victims (Taiwo, 2018). Violent behaviours, rape, suicide, drug use and abuse have been observed in higher education institutions in Nigeria. Some of the criminal behaviours have led to student unrest which resulted in closure of the institutions by the government.

Oganwu (2018) noted that impunity and pervasive moral decadence was high in the country. She reiterated that characters of hard work, honesty, integrity, dedication, fairness, accountability and justice have been jettisoned.  Parents send their children to institutions of higher learning with the hope that they will receive more knowledge, skills and competences and develop desirable attitudes needed for useful citizenship. It is also hoped that through their education and training in institutions of higher learning they will be turned into better individuals who can conveniently face the challenges of life after graduation.

The safety and learning of students in school depend on the climate created by the administrators of the institution. Students learn effectively when the school environment is safe, secured and devoid of elements capable of infringing on their freedom and comfort. The institution administrator is responsible for protecting the students against danger, treat and deprivation. He/she is responsible for creating a favourable climate for students’ safety and discipline so that the missions and visions of the institution can be more fully realized. Re-emphasizing the importance of safety, Graham (2017) expressed that there can be no future for the world without safety in schools.  Some higher institutions with high records of criminal cases no doubt will lose its’ reputation and this situation will lower the enrolment of students and withdrawal of some donors (Dawnes, 2017).

Colleges are valued institutions that help build upon the nation’s foundations and serve as an arena where the growth and stability of future generations begin. Social vices in schools and colleges is therefore one of the most troublesome social problems in the Nation today. Not only does it affect those involved in the criminal incident, but it also hinders societal growth and stability. In that light, it is vital to understand the characteristics surrounding social vices in schools, colleges, and universities and the offenders who reportedly commit these offenses so that law enforcement, policy makers, school administrators, and the public can properly combat and reduce the amount of social vices occurring at these institutions.

Situations surrounding social vices at school locations is based on the offender’s motive and the intended victim. For example, incidents involving student offenders and student victims constitute the stereotypical definition of social vices at schools, colleges, and universities where the offender and victim are present to participate in the activities occurring at the institution. However, there are situations involving adult and/or juvenile offenders and victims, where the school serves only as an offense location because neither the offender nor the victim is present to participate in school functions. Criminal acts due to political motivation, hate social vices, and social vices perpetrated by offenders against victims who are not instructors or students and have no other relation to the school are examples of such situations.

College social vices include all acts of breaking laws or rules governed by both college authorities and law enforcement authorities. The most rampant social vices committed by college students are alcoholism, underage drinking, and drug abuse. Other extreme social vices committed within the campuses are murder, burglary, robbery, vehicle theft, sexual assaults, examination malpractice, cultism, homosexuality, lesbianism vandalism, and carting away with college properties. According to some individuals, peer pressure is a major cause of theft and burglary social vices in campus. On the contrary, some researchers believe that the major cause of theft and burglary social vices in college campus is still uncertain (Justin 2017). Other types of social vices in college campus are attributed to students’ behaviors. Among these social vices are drug abuse, students’ molestation and sexual assault. In the last decade, cases of sexual assault have increased immensely in most of college campuses (Walter, 2018).

Alcohol abuse and other substance abuse have contributed hugely to the increase in social vices rates. Most students, who have been involved in sexual assault cases, have reported that they were influenced by alcohol and substance abuse to perpetuate these social vices (John, 2016). This has negatively affected the learning and retention level of students especially at the college of education level. Hence the need to ascertain the influence of social vices on Business Education Students’ learning of Financial Accounting in Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba.

Statement of the Problem

Effective teaching and learning takes place in an environment free from any form of social vices and violent activities. When the school environment is free from social vices and students obey rules and regulations of the school, they will surely perform excellently in their academic activities. But the reverse is the case when there is any form of social vices and breakdown of law and other in the school. Nigeria has recorded several cases of social vices including killings and victimization by cult groups, assassination, murder, and other violent acts. Worried about unethical practices and increasing criminal activities in Nigeria. The high incidence of social vices and violent acts have become so rampant in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. More worrisome is the acts of victimization, assault, sexual harassment, and armed robbery which have posed serious problems (Chirasha, 2017).

Over the years, it has been observed that many students’ performance has been below expectation. This has been attributed to their level of retention of what they have learnt during lectures. Many are of the opinion that students’ level of retention of learnt contents has been affected by the rate of social vices committed by the students. It is against the light of the above that this study is intended to ascertain the influence of social vices on Business Education Students’ learning of Financial Accounting in Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba.
