Utilization Of Laboratory Equipment In The Teaching And Learning Of Biology In Secondary Schools In Ahiazu Mbaise Lga

Abstract

The study critically examined issues on the extent of utilization of laboratory equipment in teaching and learning of biology in Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State and the study specifically sought to find out the available laboratory equipment used for teaching and learning of biology, extent of adequacy of these available laboratory equipments, adequacy levels of consumables and the factors limiting the effective use of laboratory equipments in the teaching and learning of biology. Four research questions guided the study. Literature reviewed on the concept of utilization, biology and teacher education, laboratory equipment, teaching and learning as well as impact and problems of teaching and learning of biology. Cognitive theory and Vygostky’s theory were formed as the theoretical framework of the study, relevant empirical studies on the utilization of laboratory equipment were reviewed. The study adopted the descriptive survey as the research design. A sample size of two hundred and four (204) students and twelve (12) biology teachers were subjected to a questionnaire and checklist which was used for the study. Thus, the findings of the study showed the extent of available laboratory equipment. The study also revealed that despite the availability they are not being utilized effective in teaching and learning of biology. The study also showed that difficulties in controlling student behaviors, insufficient fund, inadequate planning and lack of qualified teachers and laboratory technicians hinders effective teaching to a high extent. Based on the findings, the researcher concluded that schools in Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area have laboratory equipment which were not being used effectively to the teaching and learning of biology; difficulties in controlling student behavior, insufficient fund, inadequate planning and lack of qualified teachers and laboratory technicians hindered effective teaching and learning in the sense that poor experienced technicians cannot conduct effective practical for students which leads to failure of students.
