Effects Of Lecture And Discussion Methods On The Academic Performance Of Students Of Government In Isiala Mbano Lga

ABSTRACT

This research work investigated the” A Comparative study of the Influence of Lecture and Discussion Methods on The Academic Performance Of Students Of Government in Isiala – Mbano Local Government Area. Three research questions were posed for this study. The research design adopted for the study is the descriptive design. Three hundred (300) copies of questionnaires were sampled for the study. Rating scale was used on the influence of lecture method and discussion method on the academic performance of students of Government in Isiala- Mbano Local Government Area. The data collected were analyzed using mean score of 2.5 for the fifteen items of the three research questions. The study revealed among others that lecture method limits the active participation of students; discussion method increases the performance of students of government etc. From the findings of this study, the researcher recommends amongst others that teachers to use the discussion method for active participation of learners. Also, that lecturers in higher educational institutions should orient the student teachers on the importance of discussion method.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

This comparative study focuses on the influence of Lecture and Discussion methods on the academic performance of students in Government in secondary schools in Isiala-Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State. This chapter covers the background to the study, the statement of the problem, the scope of the study, the purpose of the study, the significance of the study and the research questions.

Teachers employ a number of teaching methods when they teach, the students/learners in the class. Some of the methods teachers include: lecture. discussion, demonstration, field trip, drama, games and play, Eclectic, inquiring, peer tutoring (sheep and goat) Socratic, Brain storming and project methods. This research will focus on the influence of lecture and discussion methods of teaching on the academic performance of students of Government in secondary schools in Isiala-Mbano. It is not in doubt that secondary school teachers of Government in Isiala-Mbano employ some of these methods in teaching Government to the students yet the students do not do well in the object. This is evident of the NECO and WAEC Exams in lsiala-Mbano Local Government Area,

This investigation became necessary because of this high rate of lo\\ grades of students in Government in the exit examinations of NECO and WAEC. The two methods of lecture and discussion inherent qualities and process makes teaching realistic, remove fear of teacher from the students and put the burden of students passing on their fellow students who are bound to take this as a primary responsibility/task that must be accomplished. It is necessary to note that Government as a subject in secondary school helps the students/learners understands primarily how laws are made and enforced, It also helps them understand the organs of the state and the powers vested in them. Government as a subject is introduced to students in their senior secondary school level; This is because Government a subject or study in secondary school education is synonymous with politics, political and civil education; hence, the introduction of this subject to students in secondary school is leaders of tomorrow is to make them understand the rudiment of our political systems and to give them insight into how these political systems operate.

Statement of Problem

Government as a subject study in secondary school has constituted a challenge to many students. It has been found that students have consistently performed poorly in it in the various exit examinations examples WAEC and TCO and that has constituted  a source of worry 😮 teachers, parents and school authorities. It is suspected that the reason may not be unconnected with the method through which the subject is expounded and impacted to learners/students who come in contact with the subject at the senior secondary school level for the first time in their academic growth. It is not in doubt that the method through which a subject matter is introduced and impacted play a great role in the Childs retained interest and internalization of the subject matter. There is a variety of teaching method known but it is important for the teachers to identify the teaching method that is very suitable for his students and employ it for the overall good of the student.

Consequently, the researcher has undertaken to investigate/do a comparative study on the influence and the employment of lecture and discussion method will have on the academic performance of student in Government. Although the teachers employ the various teaching methods yet the students do not perform well in the exiting examination and that is the gap. Therefore, there is need to identify if the employment of either lecture or discussion method will improve the academic performance of students in Government.

Scope of the Study

This study was carried out in some selected secondary schools in Isiala-Mbano Local Government Area, out of the 27 that Imo State has. It has its headquarters at Umuelemai. The Local Government is bounded by Onuimo LGA and Nwangele LGA in the north, in the east by Ehime Mbano Local Government Area and in the south by Ikeduru and Mbaitolu Local Government Area respectively.

Isiala-Mbano has a total of twenty eight (28) secondary schools comprising fifteen (15) government and thirteen (13) private schools has two educational zones, the exact population of students is eighty thousand and thirteen students (8013). This study was limited to all SSII students with a population of one thousand one hundred and seventy (1170) students. Isiala Mbano was chosen for this study because from the available records, there is very poor students achievement in Government despite the urban location of most schools in the area with appreciable number of qualified teachers. The senior secondary two (SSII) students were chosen for the study because they constitute the level for subject selection for exit examination.

Purpose of Study

The purpose of this study include:

  1. Ascertain the influence of Lecture method on the academic performance of students of Government in lsiala-Mbano L.G.A
  2. Ascertain the influence of Discussion method on the academic performance of students of Government in Isiala-Mbano L.G.A.
  3. Ascertain the differences on the influence of Lecture method and discussion method on the academic performance of students of Government in Isiala-Mbano L.G.A.

Significance of the Study

The significance of this study will benefit the students to overcome being shy and not outspoken in the midst of their peers. The benefits of this research findings to the students is that, it will also enable achieve the following objectives; which are mastery, attitude change, moral development, problem solving acquisition of communication, skills, clarification of ideas and also development of team work.

To the teacher, this study will enable him/her to identify the particular method that will be of more benefit for the teaching of Government as a subject.

Moreso, the findings of this research to the curriculum planners will help  them put into consideration during curriculum planning that there are so many individual differences in students and should try as much to accommodate them all during curriculum planning including children with special abilities, the handicapped and the late developers.

To the Government, this research will be of great benefit in the sense that will tend to reduce the high rate of students peer performance in their academics.

Also, the findings of this research will benefit parents in the way that they would be proud of their children having a sense of belonging of their own and developing their listening skills.

The following research questions were raised to guide this study:

  2. What is the influence of discussion method on the academic performance of students of government in Isiala Mbano LG.A.
  3. What are the differences on the influence of lecture and discussion methods on the academic performance of students of government in Isiala-Mbano L.G.A.
