Iupdate of administrative map of owerri north local government area of imo state using gis techniques
ABSTRACT
This Project work “UPDATE OF Administrative map of Owerri North Local Government Area of lmo state using GIS Techniques which aimed at producing an updated map of Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo state to be used for future development as base map for developers and tourist. The update of administrative maps refers to the process of revising and maintaining geographic maps that depict administrative boundaries, divisions and related spatial information. These maps are essential for various purposes, including governance resource management, urban planning and electoral planning. In Owerri North Local Government Area in lmo state most based maps were produced several years age. Thus making those map outdated and the maps appears in analogy form so it becomes difficult to extract new information from the maps. Hence update of administrative map is necessary and essential. So the aim of this project is to produce an updated administrative map of Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo state and its objectives is to acquire a base map of Owerri North, scan it ,project this maps into a given coordinate system( georefereces), to overlay the map in remote sensing platform, to digitise the acquired map, Also do some demonstration through various analysis of GIS (ArcGIS) in update of administrative map and to produce an up to date, comprehensive map which enhance decision making and resources allocations. The methodology or the method used for this project were the acquisition of the base map from the ministry of land survey and urban planning, and also we acquired the recent and high-resolution satellite imagery and stepwise GIS techniques. The results of the major findings were analysed. Regardless of the various problems encouctnted ,the aim and objectives of the project were achieved. I recommend that Government shold review Owerri North Map.
CHAPTER ONE
1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background to the Study
Map revision: (update) is defined as” updating, improving and correcting of map contents for publication in the same series” (Thompson, 1987) In other words; the purpose of map revision is update the information of a map from a time to time. For the purpose of providing an example, a brief description of the US Geological Survey topographical map revision method. Following (Thompson, 1987) and other, map revision is divided into four major task; total revision, partial revision, photo revision and photo inspection.
Total revision method is the “correction of all deficiencies in the planimetry and relief feature.” Partial revision is the “correction of specified map deficiencies.” Photo revision is the update of map from aerial photographs and other available sources to reflect planimetric changes. Photo inspection is the process of comparing the latest published map to recent aerial photographs to determine both the need for revision and extent of the changes.
Administrative map are maps that contains geographically recorded information pertaining to administrative matter such as supply and execution, installation of medical facilities services and maintenance area, main supply of road ,boundaries and other details necessary to show the administrative situation in relation to the tactical situation.
A map definition level of vital map, it describes the planning and administrative areas generally follow street segments, and the map store descriptive and digital boundary identifications that can be related to facility, legal and base geography area definitions as required.
1.2 Statement of the problem
In most part of the country and Owerri North Local Government Area in Imo state in particular, most base maps produced several years back and the majority of new artificial features such as buildings of different purposes (hotels, school, mtn mask etc.) and road network etc. between when map is produced and present time now are not properly accounted for and depicted. Thus making such existing map outdated and these maps appear in analogue form. Therefore, no new information can be extracted from the maps like street names, building, patrol stations, churches etc. Hence update of administrative map is essential here because once a map is produced, the graphic image is static and there is a constant need to provide the map on changes at the same time reducing defect. And also there is need to digitised and update the analogue map of Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo state using GIS techniques in order to ensure proper planning and development of the area.
1.3 Aim and Objective of the Study
1.3.1 Aim
The aim of the project is to produce an updated administrative map of Owerri North Local Government Area Of Imo state using GIS technique.
- Objectives of the study
1 To acquire a base map of the study area
- To scan the base map of the study
- To project this map into a given coordinate system (Georeferences).
4 To overlay the map in remote sensing platform.
- To digitize the acquired maps
- To demonstration through various analysis the potential of GIS in the updated of administrative map
- To provide an up to date and comprehensive administrative map to enhance decision- making and resources allocation.
1.4 Scope and Limitation of the Study
This project involves updating of administrative map Owerri North Local Government Area using GIS technique.
The scope also outline reconnaissance, acquisition of Owerri North Local Government Area geo referencing/ ratifying of scanned Owerri North Local Government Area map using cartographic embellishment, initial printing of the updated map. The work is capital intensive requires some amount of man power but less compare to convention technique which is not readily available. Also it was not easy for the researcher to acquire the coordinates of places. This work has been limited to use of the use of GIS technique, Owerri North base map and ground control points from differential GPS.
1.5. Significance of the project
Map are produce to show both natural and artificial features information especially to visitors and researcher, considering this, there is need to produce maps from Data that can portray reality as accurate as possible, in order to for rapid nature of change to be accommodated in the map. GIS an acceptable method of keeping inventory of the earth’s resources offers such powerful data gathering tool.
When digitally acquired data is used to produce a map, it will take a new form, encourage new use and uses and cartographic visualization can be possible with adequate software, image manipulation and analysis can be achieved .
1.6 Study Area
The area of study of this project is Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State.
About Owerri North
Owerri North is a Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Orie Uratta. It has an area of 198 square km and a population of 175,395 at the 2006 census. The postal code of the area is 460. Owerri North is semi-urban government area. It encircles Owerri Municipal like a peninsula. Six major roads that lead out of the municipal cuts across Owerri North Communities. In the North, Orlu road leads to Amakaohia and Akwakuma communities. In the East, Okigwe road leads to Orji Community. In the West, MCC road off Wetheral to ObibiUratta and Ihitaoha communities. In the South, Mbaise road leads to Egbu and Emekuku communities, while Aba road leads to Naze, Agbala and Ulakwo communities.
