Abstract

To explore the socio-religious implications of abortion among Imo State University students, a research approach that includes secondary sources, specifically using the historical method and sociological method, was employed. This provides a comprehensive understanding of the topic by examining both historical perspectives and sociological theories. The scope of the study includes an extensive review and analysis of existing literature related to abortion and its socio-religious implications among students at Imo State University.The Limitations of the study includes the reliance on secondary sources of data. A systematic review of existing literature, reports, and studies related to the topic of reasons behind abortion among university students in various settings reviewed the reasons behind abortion, myths and believe about abortion, socio-religious implications of abortion among Imo state university student and attitude of Imo state university students towards abortion.This study highlights the implications of the study for policymakers and practitioners, advocating for the development of appropriate interventions and support services that consider the socio-religious dimensions of abortion among Imo State University students.
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION

Abortion is a highly debated and controversial topic globally. It encompasses various ethical, sparking discussions and debates in different societies and cultures. This study aims to delve into the socio-religious implications of abortion among the student population if Imo State University, located in southeastern Nigeria. By exploring the factors contributing to abortion among these students, their attitudes and beliefs towards abortion, and analyzing the implications on religious and cultural values and practices, this study aims to shed light on an important issue.

1.1 Background to the study

Abortion is a complex and controversial issue that raises ethical, moral, and legal questions in many parts of the world. This study aims to examine the socio-religious implications of abortion among Imo State University students.

According to a study by Darney et al. (2016), nearly 56% of abortions in Africa are unsafe, leading to high maternal mortality rates. Despite the dangers of unsafe abortions, illegal and unsafe abortions are still prevalent in many African countries, including Nigeria.

The religious and cultural norms of the region also play a significant role in shaping attitudes and beliefs about abortion. For instance, Nigeria is a predominantly religious society with a strong adherence to traditional values. These values view abortion as morally and religiously unacceptable, and thus, many people are opposed to the practice.

Imo State University, located in the southeastern region of Nigeria, is a significant academic institution with a diverse student population. However, like many universities in developing countries, issues such as access to reproductive health services, including contraception and safe abortion services, are still being addressed.

This study will explore the socio-religious implications of abortion among Imo State University students. The study intends to identify the factors that contribute to abortion among the student population, the attitudes and beliefs towards abortion, and the implications of these factors on religious and cultural values and practices. The study will also examine the students’ awareness and access to reproductive health services and information.

1.2 Statement of the problem

The issue of abortion remains a pertinent topic, particularly in developing countries where religious and cultural values strongly dictate people’s attitudes and beliefs towards the practice. Imo State University, located in southeastern Nigeria, has a diverse student population. However, access to reproductive health services and information is still inadequate. This creates a situation where some students engage in unsafe abortions. The study seeks to identify the factors that contribute to abortion among the student population, the attitudes and beliefs towards abortion, and the implications of these factors on religious and cultural values and practices.

1.3 Purpose of the study

The purpose of this study is to investigate the socio-religious implications of abortion among Imo State University students. Specifically, the study aims to:

– Identify the factors that contribute to abortion among the student population,

– Examine the attitudes and beliefs towards abortion among the student population,

– Analyze the implications of these factors on religious and cultural values and practices, and

– Determine the awareness and access to reproductive health services and information among the student population.

1.4 Methodology

Additionally, historical records such as diaries, personal accounts, and legal documents may be examined to trace the evolution of societal views on abortion.
2. b) Archival Research: Accessing relevant archives, both physical and digital, will allow for the exploration of primary documents related to abortion practices among Imo State University students, such as newspapers, official reports, and personal correspondence. These sources will provide valuable context and firsthand accounts of social, religious, and legal perspectives on abortion.
3. c) Analysis and Interpretation: The data gathered through the literature review and archival research will be analyzed using historical analysis techniques. This involves critically examining the sources, identifying patterns, themes, and changes over time, and interpreting the findings within the socio-religious context of Imo State University.
4. Sociological Method:

1.5 Scope and limitation of the study

This study focused on the socio-religious implications of abortion among Imo State University students. The Limitations of the Study includes; the reliance on secondary sources of data. As the researcher does not have direct control over the data collection process, there is a potential risk of inconsistent or biased information within the literature. The study will also be limited to a specific academic institution and may not be generalizable to other institutions in Nigeria or other developing countries.

1.6 Significance of the study

This study is important, as it sheds light on the socio-religious implications of abortion among Imo State University students. The study’s findings can inform policies and interventions aimed at improving access to safe abortion services and reproductive health information and services in the region. Additionally, the study’s findings can serve as a reference point for future research on the topic in other academic institutions in Nigeria and other developing countries. Overall, this study is significant in providing insights into the complex and controversial issue of abortion in developing countries.
