Abstract

To explore the socio-religious implications of abortion among Imo State University students, a research approach that includes secondary sources, specifically using the historical method and sociological method, was employed. This provides a comprehensive understanding of the topic by examining both historical perspectives and sociological theories. The scope of the study includes an extensive review and analysis of existing literature related to abortion and its socio-religious implications among students at Imo State University.The Limitations of the study includes the reliance on secondary sources of data. A systematic review of existing literature, reports, and studies related to the topic of reasons behind abortion among university students in various settings reviewed the reasons behind abortion, myths and believe about abortion, socio-religious implications of abortion among Imo state university student and attitude of Imo state university students towards abortion.This study highlights the implications of the study for policymakers and practitioners, advocating for the development of appropriate interventions and support services that consider the socio-religious dimensions of abortion among Imo State University students.
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION

Abortion is a highly debated and controversial topic globally. It encompasses various ethical, sparking discussions and debates in different societies and cultures. This study aims to delve into the socio-religious implications of abortion among the student population if Imo State University, located in southeastern Nigeria. By exploring the factors contributing to abortion among these students, their attitudes and beliefs towards abortion, and analyzing the implications on religious and cultural values and practices, this study aims to shed light on an important issue.

1.1 Background to the study

Abortion is a complex and controversial issue that raises ethical, moral, and legal questions in many parts of the world. This study aims to examine the socio-religious implications of abortion among Imo State University students.

According to a study by Darney et al. (2016), nearly 56% of abortions in Africa are unsafe, leading to high maternal mortality rates. Despite the dangers of unsafe abortions, illegal and unsafe abortions are still prevalent in many African countries, including Nigeria.

This creates a situation where some students engage in unsafe abortions. 1.3 Purpose of the study

The purpose of this study is to investigate the socio-religious implications of abortion among Imo State University students. Specifically, the study aims to:

– Examine the attitudes and beliefs towards abortion among the student population,

– Analyze the implications of these factors on religious and cultural values and practices, and
