CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background to the Study
Economic development of any society refers to the ability of the society to improve the lives of its people in terms of human capital, economy, social improvement, democracy building, among others (Olawolu 2015). Education is obviously the basic instrument of economic growth and technological advancement of any society, it is in recognition of this fact that governments commit immense resources to ensure the provision of education for their citizens and also tailored their policies towards ensuring that it is made accessible to the generality of their citizenry (Oyebade, Adebayo & Okonji 2016). However, business education is an essential element of this general education. It is concerned with the impartation of business orientation and knowledge for personal and national development.
According to Amoor (2015), Education serves as a cornerstone to any form of development as it lies at the heart of every society. He further stated that education is a key and a vital element in the broad development of the societies, youth’s capacity to address and solve surrounding problems or difficulties. According to Ugwuogo (2015), education itself does not only mean schooling even though schooling is essential, yet it is a much wider concept embracing formal and informal methods of learning; traditional and non-traditional teaching processing, self-learning (through various media such as books, Tv, internet, Radio , etc) According to Ezeani (2016), education consolidates and holds upon basic education to empower the youth to real live, function as a productive member of the society, earning a living, and contributing to societal progress.
Business education involves teaching students the fundamentals, concepts, theories and processes of business. Okoli (2017), sees business education as an important part of the general education which emphasizes on skills and competencies acquisition for use in offices and business related occupations. Similarly, Nwanewezi (2015), describe business education as encompassing education for office occupations, business teaching, business administration and economic understanding. In all, Abdulkadir (2016), notes that one remarkable important characteristic of business education program is that, its products can function independently as self-employed and employers of labor. To this end, the tenet of business education embraces basic education for teaching career, Business, business understanding, office environment and vocational practices.
Therefore, business education continuously builds on the knowledge, skills, values and attitude learnt at the lower phases of education, Abdulkadir (2016). Ugwuogo (2015) went further to state that business education which encompasses several disciplines enables people to think, speak and behave in ways that support the growth, efficiency and effectiveness of an organization or several organizations. Kaegon (2016) once stated that business education must be ready to offer their recipients functional education that will enhance performance as well as assist them to contribute meaningfully to the economic development of the society in which their live and the nation at large, but one who has highly developed business skills honed through years of experience in his field without basic education in business does well in contributing to national goal of poverty alleviation through employment creation. Although they might have some gaps in their understanding, so taking a few classes to shore up their skills in a particular area becomes imperative.
Thus, the demand for business education is on the increase all over the world as it prepares youths to be responsible and self dependent individuals, who become entrepreneurs or entrepreneurial thinkers by exposing them in real life experience where they will be required to think, take risks, manage circumstances and incidentally learn from the outcome (Olawolu & Kaegon, 2015). Business education as a discipline is expected to expose its recipients to diversity curricula, hence, it is that type of education that inculcate in its recipients attitudes, knowledge, skills, values that is required in the business world (Okoli, 2015). However, business education program is relevant in economic development of any nation because it is believed that the richest people in the world are business minded people, because their help to reduce unemployment in the society and business education program helps to build graduates who will in turn make use of their vocational skills instead of waiting for white collar jobs after graduation and by so doing, will either become an entrepreneurs or employers of labour which will help in the economic development of the nation. Hence, the researcher seeks to survey the relevance of business education program to economic development in Delta North.
Statement of the Problem
Business education is a programme of instruction that equips recipients with the requisite attributes for job creation and further education. Therefore, business education being a vocational and technical education has an immense relevance to the economic development of any society because it teaches the students how to become an entrepreneur after school which will help reduce the unemployment rate in the society and improve the economic development of that society.
Despite all this reasonable evidence, business education programs still face a lot of problem which the researcher seeks to investigate if lack of unqualified business education teachers, use of obsolete technologies, class sizes, poor funding from both the school administrator and the government among others are the possible problems influencing business education program in other to improve the economic development of the Delta North. The researcher on the other hand seeks to ascertain if actually the government of Delta North recognizes the relevance of business education program to the economic development of the state or even the business education graduates in the office such as; lack of state mandates for our curriculum, funding and budgeting issues, support from local administration, Board of education and educating our community.
This situation has consequently starved business education of proper funding, qualified staff, modern facilities, and quality curriculum, coupled with proper attention. This situation has devalued the image and reputation of business education both in the education and labour market, and has contributed to the high rate of unemployment and poverty among business education graduates. The issue of unemployment and poverty is unconnected to spate of terrorist attacks, kidnappings, suicide bombing, high crime rate, vandalism, and break down of law and order. The high rate of insecurity has further contributed to the under-development of Nigerian economy. It is based on these upsurges that the researcher seeks to survey the relevance of business education program to economic development as perceived by business educators in Delta North.
